Two years later, the challenge was met, and the Smithsonian APAP had raised over $1.5 million to establish an endowment to allow the Asian Pacific American Program to expand its work integrating Asian Pacific American history and culture into Smithsonian programs, collections and research.
APAP Director Franklin Odo said, "We are extremely grateful to the Starr Foundation. Its gift has established the foundation for an endowment fund that will support critical projects in perpetuity. All Asian Pacific American communities will be enriched as a result of this generous contribution."
The Starr Foundation was established in 1955 by Cornelius Vander Starr, an insurance entrepreneur who founded the American International family of insurance and financial services companies, now known as American International Group, Inc. Mr. Starr, a pioneer of globalization, set up his first insurance venture in Shanghai in 1919. He died in 1968 at the age of 76, leaving his estate to the Foundation.
