Further Information
The Americans for Gun Safety Foundation, a project of the Tides Center, a Section 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, seeks to educate Americans on existing gun laws and new policy options for reducing access to guns by criminals and children and to promote responsible gun ownership. The AGS Foundation supports the rights of individuals to own firearms.
The Americans for Gun Safety Foundation is based in Washington, DC, and was founded in July 2000.
Our Mission

The AGS Foundation provides background, research and reference materials to the public and to policymakers on issues relating to gun safety. This information is intended to promote responsible gun ownership and to help make sure guns do not end up in the wrong hands. To that end, the AGS Foundation seeks to raise awareness about these issues by providing on-line resources such as national and state-specific information about gun use and gun laws, links to websites for groups on both sides of the gun debate, and a firearms safety program.
Our Projects

A milestone AGS Foundation project is our online gun safety program, which is comprehensive, in-depth, and includes components tailored to address the special concerns of different audiences. We encourage everyonegun owners, non-owners, parents, teenagers, teachers and othersto return often to view this material. In addition, the AGS Foundation has several other gun safety projects under development which will be launched in the coming months.
The AGS Foundation will also issue research reports on leading public policy and legislative issues, such as background checks at gun shows. This is the subject of our latest report, "No Questions Asked: Background Checks, Gun Shows and Crime." This report, and those that follow, will provide citizens and policymakers with in-depth, thoughtful research leading gun safety issues facing Congress, state legislatures, and the general public. All AGS Foundation reports are available on this website.
In addition, the AGS Foundation will produce substantial research on other gun safety issues. For example, we currently are examining the Brady Act background check process and searching for ways to make it faster and more convenient for gun buyers and sellers, and tougher on criminals and other prohibited purchasers. One study will examine the process by which states develop, maintain, and update their mental health records and keep track of those prohibited from purchasing a gun by virtue of mental illness.
