June 6, 2001

Senator John McCain
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator McCain:

On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 2.6 million members, we would like to thank you for your leadership in introducing S. 890, a moderate, common-sense bill to close the gun show loophole and crack down on gun crime. NEA enthusiastically endorses S. 890 and stands ready to work toward passage of this important legislation.

Educators across the country have expressed outrage over the tragic loss of life due to unnecessary gun violence. Recent episodes of school violence underscore the need to take action to keep guns away from children and criminals. NEA applauds the work you and your colleagues have done to reach an innovative, bipartisan solution to this serious and difficult problem.

As you know, criminals in 32 states can buy guns at gun shows with no questions asked. By requiring background checks for all gun sales at gun shows, S. 890 will close this dangerous loophole in the Brady Law and cut off a major source of guns to criminals. It also will provide a range of new tools to help law enforcement fight gun crime. These measures will make a critical difference in ensuring the safety of our nation's children.

NEA believes that in order to honor our colleagues, students, and all those lost to senseless gun violence, we must do more than continue to hold memorials. We must take action to pass meaningful legislation such as S. 890. We thank you again for your leadership, and look forward to working with you on this critical issue.

Sincerely,

The National Education Association
