Statement of Americans for Gun Safety President Jonathan Cowan on the Justice Department's New NICS Regulations

Washington, DC—"We applauded when President Bush said in a speech in Philadelphia last month that he wants to crack down on criminals with 'focus and intensity' and 'increase accountability within our systems' to fight gun crime. We are therefore baffled as to why his Administration's first move has been to tie the hands of law enforcement. Rather than moving toward increased accountability, the Attorney General has taken a step that will undermine law enforcement in their fight to keep criminals from getting guns."

"Corrupt gun dealers are a major source of black-market guns, which fuels gun crime. The audits that the FBI conducts of the NICS system helps lead them to these dishonest dealers. Today's action guts the ability of the FBI to ferret out these criminals."

"While the negative impact of on law enforcement is clear, we fail to see how this action will in any way benefit gun owners or gun dealers unless they happen to be law-breakers. Law abiding dealers and buyers have absolutely nothing to fear from NICS audits—only criminals and their gun suppliers do."

"There are a few hundred suspect gun stores dotting the nation. These corrupt stores are the only ones to gain by today's action."

"Last year, ATF determined that corrupt gun stores were the leading source for illegal gun traffickers. This year, the Justice Department has given these corrupt dealers one more reason to breathe easy."
