Bipartisan Gun Show Loophole Measure Introduced in the House Americans for Gun Safety Joins Reps. Castle, McCarthy in Push For Measure to Close Loophole and Crack Down on Gun Crime Washington, DCAmericans for Gun Safety (AGS) today vowed to join senior House Republican Mike Castle (R-DE) and longtime gun safety advocate Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) in their efforts to put bipartisan gun show loophole closing legislation on the President's desk during this Congress. The Castle-McCarthy bill, introduced in the House today, is the companion to S.890, the McCain-Lieberman bill, which was introduced in the Senate in May. "Like their colleagues in the Senate, Representatives Castle and McCarthy, along with Ron Kirk (R-IL), Dennis Moore (D-KS), Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) and more than 60 other co-sponsors, have reached across the aisle to forge an innovative, bipartisan solution to a difficult and important problem," said AGS president Jonathan Cowan. "The Castle-McCarthy bill will require background checks at gun shows and crack down on gun crime without interfering with the operation of gun shows or infringing on the rights of law-abiding Americans to buy and sell guns." Americans for Gun Safety has helped develop a broad base of support for the Castle-McCarthy bill. Groups supporting the measure include:
"This coalition, which includes police officers, teachers, community officials, gun safety activists and mothers have come together to urge Congress and President Bush to take action on the gun show loophole," Cowan said. "We applaud Representatives Castle, McCarthy and their colleagues for heeding this call and creating moderate legislation that protects gun rights while creating gun responsibility." Further information about the Castle-McCarthy and McCain-Lieberman bills and the gun show loophole is available on the AGS website: www.americansforgunsafety.com.
