Statement by Americans For Gun Safety President Jonathan Cowan on the Tragedy at Santana High School

Washington, DC—Americans for Gun Safety (AGS) President Jonathan Cowan released the following statement in the wake of the tragedy yesterday at Santana High School in California:

"We applaud Senator Schumer for his suggestion that all sides in the gun debate come together to develop a code of responsibility to make guns in the home as safe as possible, and we offer our commitment to work with any group that seeks a good faith effort to keep guns out of the hands of children.

"Americans for Gun Safety supports better laws and tougher enforcement of existing laws to keep guns out of the hands of children and criminals, but we believe as well that safe gun ownership begins and ends with vigilant parental responsibility.

"Our prayers are with the families of the children who were killed or injured at Santana High School yesterday. We pray that America will never again turn on the television to see children fleeing from carnage at their school. But we know that without better laws to keep guns out of the hands of children and greater responsibility among many parents to make guns safer in the home, it is unlikely that our prayers will be answered. We stand ready to help develop a code of responsibility to assist parents in making a gun in the home as safe as possible."
