Americans for Gun Safety (AGS) is releasing a radio ad applauding the President's new gun crime initiative and asking him to join their effort to require criminal background checks at gun shows. The ad is running in Philadelphia during the President's visit, where he is expected to announce his new gun initiative.
Pennsylvania, the site of the Bush speech, requires background checks at gun shows, and the state hosts the second most gun shows in the nation, according to listings in the Krause Gun/Knife Show Calendar. Bill Owen, President of Pennsylvanians Against Handgun Violence, said in a statement: "Pennsylvania proves that we can close the gun show loophole in a way that is fair to gun enthusiasts and keeps criminals out of gun shows."
The text of the 60-second radio ad reads as follows:
|
ANNOUNCER: "Mr. President, thank you for your commitment to crack down on criminals who use guns. We hope you'll also help us make it harder for criminals to get guns in the first place. And that means requiring background checks at gun shows.
In Pennsylvania we take gun shows seriouslyhundreds are held every year. And we're also serious about gun safety. No one may buy a gun at a Pennsylvania gun show without a background check.
But felons in 32 states can get guns at gun shows with no questions asked and resell them on our streets. That's why we need a national law requiring background checks at all gun shows.
Mr. President, gun rights come with gun responsibilities. That means locking up criminals and closing the loophole that gives them the freedom to buy guns at gun shows.
Here in Pennsylvania, we've shown that responsible gun owners have nothing to fear from background checks at gun shows. Only criminals do.
Paid for by Americans for Gun Safety Tsunami Fund."
