I grew up in rural Colorado, and I haven't forgotten that Colorado consists of rural people as well as those from our cities and suburbs. Growing up in a rural community, I learned that the "rest" of Colorado has different needs from those living in our bigger cities.
Rural Health Care
All communities should have access to health care professionals, and no one should have to commute long distances to simply see a doctor. I favor providing incentives to draw top quality health care practitioners into rural areas.

Rural schools should provide a wide array of skills to maximize opportunities for our kids. We must find ways to recruit and retain top quality teachers in our rural schools, and we should use online classes and other new technologies to maximize educational opportunities. Our rural schools should offer more than just ranch management, and instead should include substantial courses on innovative rural economic development.
Help for Rural Farmers and Ranchers
As the Fourth District's Congressman, I will work to pass positive legislation that will provide tangible opportunities for our state's farmers and ranchers. Rural Colorado provides economic vitality, open space, and resource protection benefits that are enjoyed by everyone in this state. While our state and federal governments cannot address every problem in the agricultural marketplace, we can develop programs to create new marketing opportunities for farmers and ranchers. In the Spring 2002 session of the State Senate, I will be carrying a bill to request that we declare a state of agricultural emergency so that we can immediately address the rural economic plight.
Rural Transportation
Coloradans traveling our rural roads need assistance to safely maintain the roads they have, and to make improvements when needed. When increased traffic benefits the statewide and federal economy, rural Coloradans should not pay the price alone.
Helping Rural Coloradans
As the Fourth District's Congressman, I will build on the work I am doing as your State Senator. For example, in the Spring 2002 session of the state legislature, I plan to support legislation that:
|
Encourages Colorado's institutions to buy more from local producers |
 |
Creates a "Born & Raised" labeling program for products produced, processed and packaged within Colorado |
 |
Strengthens the state's organic certification program |
 |
Develops incentives for farmers and ranchers to participate in wind-power generation |
 |
Establishes a Farmer's Market Nutrition Program, to provide incentives for participants in programs such as the Federal WIC food program to buy products at Colorado farmer's markets. |
