Congressman Robert Matsui and Colorado Senate President Stan Matsunaka Sign Pledge to Not Privatize Social Security
FT. COLLINSToday at Highland Senior Center Congressman Robert Matsui, from CA-05, and Colorado Senate President Stan Matsunaka, candidate for Congress in CO-04, signed a pledge that they would not privatize Social Security, and would work to provide seniors with affordable prescription drug coverage. "Growing up in rural Colorado I've seen the value of Social Security firsthand," said Matsunaka. "This is a critical community program for millions of people across America, and we must do all we can to ensure its survival."
"Too many people today are being forced to make impossible decisions. In one hand they've got a prescription drug bottle, and in the other is the electric bill. They open their cupboards and know they need to buy something to eat, and we all want to do more for our families. People shouldn't have to make these kinds of choices," said Matsunaka. "This is America, and I know we can do better." Congressman Matsui, visiting Colorado to campaign for Matsunaka, said, "It's critical that in this year's election Colorado voters know exactly where the candidates stand on the issue of privatizing Social Security. By signing this pledge Stan has shown his commitment to Colorado's seniors and working families." Matsui continued, "As the ranking member of the Social Security subcommittee I've studied the proposals to privatize Social Security, and they don't work. That's why its important candidates make it clear where they stand on this important issue."
"My opponent has said that she's in favor of privatization," said Matsunaka. "I disagree. Social Security is a valuable community program rooted in the American tradition of social insurance where everyone pays and everyone benefits. To ensure that Social Security continues to offer steady and reliable support to all of our senior citizens and working families we must prevent the privatization of Social Security. We need to institute a pro-active approach to health care. And we have to protect the Social Security trust fund."
