Matsunaka Will Fight Corporate Corruption
FT. COLLINSToday at the Labor 2002 Rally Stan Matsunaka, Senate President and candidate in CO-04, spoke out against the corporate abuses that have destroyed America's confidence in the economy and have left Northern Colorado in economic turmoil. "We need to create a pro-business environment without the kind of abuses we've seen over the past year. It's clear that even good, honest companies are being affected by these Wall Street scandals," said Matsunaka. "These scandals are destroying our economy, our retirement savings, and our working families." "We need to get tough on Wall Street. Whether you steal with a pencil or a pistol, you should go to jail," said Matsunaka. "But just throwing these guys in jail won't solve the whole problem. A $5 million fine and 4 years in prison isn't much of a penalty for someone who just stole $350 million from honest, hard working Colorado families. We need to take back the money they stole and then some, and then throw them in jail." "To boost Colorado's economy we need to reinstitute investment tax credits so that our farms, ranches, and small business can continue to grow and profit, we need to crack down on Wall Street corruption, and we need to create new markets for our independent producers. We need to put people's priorities over politics and start working for Colorado's families." In late August Governor Owens called for economic reforms nearly identical to those sponsored by Matsunaka during the last legislative session. "Last session I sponsored a resolution requesting various state agencies to use only those accounting firms complying with strict regulationsregulations nearly identical to those asked for by Governor Owens."
That resolution, SJR02-004 would have helped to combat the fraudulent accounting practices the Enron scandal brought to light. "I've been dealing with the issue of corporate fraud for some time now, and I'm pleased that the Governor now sees
