Matsunaka Proposes Water Solutions After Trip
Through Arkansas Valley and Eastern Colorado

FT. COLLINS—"In Colorado we need to think about what we can do to expand our water resources immediately, in the next 5 years, 10 years, and 20 years," said Stan Matsunaka, recently returned from a tour through the Arkansas Valley and Eastern Colorado. "If you just have a dam building plan without a conservation or existing facilities plan then you're working on solutions that won't help for 20 years. We need additional water storage, but our farmers and ranchers are suffering, and we need to help them right now."

"I've asked the Colorado Department of Natural Resources to release additional water from the Cherry Creek Reservoir that's currently being held back for recreational uses. We have a drought plan in this state, and agriculture comes before jet skis and sail boats. Farmers and ranchers along the Platte River need that water now."

"Any good water plan needs to focus on three areas: conservation, expansion of existing water storage facilities, and the creation of new water storage facilities," said Matsunaka. "We need to practice efficient water use every year, not just during drought years. We can expand our water storage capacity by 40% through dredging and repairs to existing facilities. And in the long term, we need to examine how we can expand our water resources to keep more Colorado water for Colorado's farmers and ranchers."

Stan Matsunaka received a warm welcome in the Arkansas Valley and Southeast Colorado. "What people wanted to talk about was water, education, social security, water, prescription drugs, and water—in that order. I think I showed them I have a deep understanding of rural issues, having grown up on Colorado's Eastern Plains."

Stan Matsunaka is a fourth generation Coloradan who grew up in Fort Morgan, Colorado, where he met his wife Cathy and helped his widowed father raise five boys.

More about Senator Matsunaka's legislative accomplishments and plans can be found at his campaign website: www.stan2002.com. A press kit for reporters is available at www.stan2002.com/press.html.
