Attorney General Ken Salazar Endorses Matsunaka for Congress

Matsunaka Dominates in Weld and Larimer County Assemblies

Attorney General Ken Salazar "I endorse Stan because his history is rooted in the plains of Colorado.

The heroism of his family makes us proud to be Americans. He will be a great congressman."

—Atty. General Ken Salazar

LOVELAND—"Welcome to Matsunaka Country," exclaimed Attorney General Ken Salazar as he opened his remarks to the Weld County Democratic Party Assembly, Saturday May 18, 2002.

Salazar endorsed Senate President Stan Matsunaka's bid for the 4th Congressional District seat left vacant by the retirement of Representative Bob Schaffer. "I endorse Stan because his history is rooted in the plains of Colorado. The heroism of his family makes us proud to be Americans. He will be a great congressman," stated Salazar.

Stan Matsunaka went on to dominate the straw poll held at the Weld gathering with 66 delegates for Matsunaka, 9 for Pat Waak and 3 undecided. The Weld County Assembly was held on the Greeley campus of the University of Northern Colorado. Later on Saturday, Matsunaka continued to roll up large margins of victory at the Larimer County Assembly. The delegate preference vote in Larimer County was 101 for Matsunaka, 16 for Waak and 2 undecided.

"My common sense approach to the issues important to Colorado's working families is a winning formula. Protecting Social Security, ensuring affordable and accessible health care and providing a quality education for all children regardless of their parents' means or ability to pay are my commitment to the voters of the 4th Congressional District," stated Matsunaka. The Larimer County Assembly was held at Lesher Jr. High in Ft. Collins, the alma mater of Abe Denmark, Larimer County Democratic Chairman.

"I was impressed with Senator Matsunaka's $15 billion transportation funding plan. He worked a compromise with Governor Bill Owens for the good of all Coloradans. Matsunaka is the kind of bi-partisan leader we need in Washington," stated David Sullins, chairman of the 15th Senate District Assembly.

Information about Senator Matsunaka's legislative accomplishments and plans can be found at his campaign website: www.stan2002.com. A press kit for reporters is available at http://www.stan2002.com/press.html.
