 National Security
     overview    in depth

Stan Matsunaka Marilyn Musgrave
Stan Supports more security with less bureaucracy

Stan Matsunaka supports the President's actions on Iraq, and supports the amended resolution that Congress has passed.

Stan Matsunaka believes that we need more security with less bureaucracy. He supports President Bush's reorganization of the federal government to create the new Department of Homeland Security. We must dismantle expensive and antiquated Cold War relics and redirect the money to confront the elusive threat of terrorists. We need smarter, leaner, more responsive military forces to ensure America's security.  more

Musgrave supports re-instituting the draft

Marilyn Musgrave supports the President's actions on Iraq, and supports the amended resolution that Congress has passed.

Marilyn Musgrave has said that she favors re-instituting the draft—compulsory military service. The draft might have been the answer during World War II, but pouring more men into the modern military will increase the cost without increasing our security. A bloated military cannot protect America from the modern threat of individual terrorists.  more

Stan Matsunaka supports President Bush's reduction of our strategic nuclear arsenal from 6,000 to 2,200 warheads. The Peacekeeper missiles that were recently deactivated at Wyoming Air Force base cost $70 million each, and cost $135 million per year to maintain. These missiles were an effective deterrent during the Cold War, but they are useless to stop a hijacker or a suitcase bomb. We need to completely rethink our national defense system, and focus our funds where they are most needed and will be most effective in defending our nation.

Marilyn Musgrave supports renewing compulsory military service (the draft), yet she frequently refers to Ronald Reagan as her hero.

However, it was President Reagan himself who wrote that the draft "rests on the assumption that your kids belong to the state. If we buy that assumption then it is for the state—not for parents, the community, the religious institutions or teachers—to decide who shall have what values and who shall do what work, when, where and how in our society. The assumption isn't a new one. The Nazis thought it was a great idea."
