| Musgrave voted against reducing the cost of prescription drugs |
|
|
Marilyn Musgrave believes that private industry can be trusted to provide adequate care for our seniors. She has voted against lowering the price of prescription drugs and against expanding drug coverage. She was joined by only two other Colorado State Senators in voting against a bill studying the offer of state health insurance to small employers. Marilyn Musgrave has taken $2000 from GlaxoSmithKline, a large pharmaceutical, and $2000 from Cigna Corporation PAC, an insurance company.

| In Depth: Stan Matsunaka on Medicare and Rx Drugs |
| |
 | |
Stan sponsored two pieces of legislation to reduce the cost of prescription drugs under Medicare (HB02-1201, SB00-143), and voted in favor of two additional bills to help low-income families and seniors by lowering the cost of prescription drugs (SB02-081, SB02-162). |
| |
 | |
Stan believes that it doesn't make sense that Americans pay double for the same prescription drugs that are sold in other countries, including Mexico and Canada. To equalize prices, we must dilute the research and development costs of pharmaceutical companies by spreading the burden of cost to other countries. |
| |
 | |
A second way to reduce costs is to utilize bulk buying agreements through Medicare, just like the VA does. We must authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services to use the collective bargaining power of Medicare's 40 million beneficiaries to negotiate lower prices on drugs that are particularly vital or widely needed. |
| |
 | |
We must foster competition in the pharmaceutical industry with the timely introduction of generic drugs. Stan also thinks we can find innovative ways to lower barriers to market entry and encourage prospective start-ups. By cultivating competition, we can lower prices and induce pharmaceuticals to become more efficient, while still protecting their profits and ensuring new technological development. |
| |
 | |
We must begin an aggressive program of early detection and proactive disease management. By enabling patients to follow treatment plans and care for themselves, we improve their quality of life and their overall health. By looking ahead and planning for each patient's medical future, we reduce the number of emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and nursing home enrollments. Seniors will be healthier, and at a lower cost. |
