Stan Matsunaka has consistently sponsored and supported bills to increase the effectiveness of the public education system. In 2002, Stan sponsored two bills to improve academic performance (SB02-212, SB02-059, Rocky Mountain News candidate questionnaire).

In 2000, Stan also sponsored a bill to provide grants for school programs that improve academic performance in science and mathematics (SB00-004), and co-sponsored a bill to increase funding to schools (HB00-1159). He also voted to increase funding for libraries, community colleges, and universities (SB00-085, HB02-1371).

Stan sponsored a bill to reward high-performing schools (SB01-098), voted in favor of bills to reduce class sizes and attract high-quality teachers to Colorado's public schools (SB01-089, SB01-163), and to give cities and counties the use of impact fees to pay for schools that result from new development (SB02-102).

Stan Matsunaka has been endorsed by the Colorado Education Association and the National Education Association, and was recently presented with a special Friend of Education award.
