 Colorado Native

My great-grandparents chose to make their home in Colorado, and I feel so lucky to have been raised here. Part of the reason I am pursuing the opportunity to represent the voters of Colorado's Fourth District in Congress is to help preserve this wonderful state for my children and grandchildren.

Boyhood in Colorado

Ever since I was a boy, I have hiked and biked all over Colorado. I used to go fishing with my dad and my brothers at Jackson Lake in Morgan County and the Red Feather Lakes in Larimer County.

Now I enjoy getting up early and heading out to fish on the Poudre, Laramie and Thompson rivers with my son Brian.

Enjoying the Outdoors
After a long week in the state capitol in Denver, there is nothing that relaxes me like the beauty and solitude of a weekend hiking in the Spanish Peaks or in Rocky Mountain National Park. If we can't get away for the whole weekend, sometimes my wife Kathy and I will do 18 holes of golf at the course near our home in Loveland.

Traveling Around the State

While my two daughters and son were growing up, I traveled all over Colorado as coach of their basketball and football teams. Even when the rides were long, I always enjoyed seeing the beauty of the Colorado landscape.

Our daughter Kristi is a junior at Thompson Valley, and I'm a proud parent watching the girls varsity basketball team play this season.

Supporting the Rams and Buffalos
As a loyal Ram, I've had season tickets to CSU football games for many years. Now with Brian a freshman at CU, we have season tickets to watch the Buffs at Folsom Field.

Remembering Some of the Hard Times
Being a Colorado native means that I have lived through some hard times as well as the many good ones. Like you, I was worried about my friends, family and community in July 1997 when a flood swept through the CSU campus. As a kid, I helped to clean up after the havoc created by the South Platte River flood in 1965. And most of us remember the devastating effect of the Big Thompson Flood in 1976—which I remember well because it happened just a week before Kathy and I were married.

Colorado Pride
You don't have to be a Colorado native to love this state, or to serve it as its representative in Congress. But I think that my lifetime of experiences here has made me more aware of what is important about our state, and how precious it is that we preserve what is special for our children and grandchildren.
