"Why I support Stan Matsunaka"
"As a lifelong Republican, I cannot go along with unthinking party partisanship regarding the race in the 4th Congressional District," said Bruce Broderius, retired UNC Professor Emeritus and Republican 4th CD delegate.
"Some people have told me to 'hold my nose' and vote for Marilyn Musgrave. Well, to me, that's a strong argument not to vote for her. It's really just another way of saying that Musgrave has a narrow agenda and is a weak candidate. We can do better than that."
"The Fourth District is facing some serious problems and we need real solutions. We need an intelligent representative who has a broad command of the issues, not a narrow ideologue who doesn't understand what is important to the people of this District. From what I can see, Musgrave doesn't think for herself and hasn't formulated intelligent responses to the issues we care about. As a thoughtful Republican, I'm dismayed that she seems to know so little about the issues."
"I'm a Republican because I don't want the government butting in"
"The main reason I've been a Republican all these years is that I value my autonomy and my independence. I'm a Republican because I don't want the government butting into my life where it doesn't belong."

"The last thing I want is for extremists to try to tell me how to think and how to live. Marilyn Musgrave is just too extreme. As I said to the Denver Post, I don't think extremists belong in my pulpit. I don't think they belong in my doctor's office. I don't think they belong in my schools."
"That's why, as a lifelong and committed Republican, I could never support the kind of in-your-face government interference that Marilyn Musgrave represents. It would be against the principles I hold dear and against the very basis of my loyalty to good Republican values."
"I think it's hypocriticalor weak-mindedto call yourself a Republican and then try to bring government regulations into places they don't belong. That's not Republicanism, it's just extremism."
"I oppose Musgrave because I am true to Republican values"
"I like and respect Stan Matsunaka, and I've told him exactly where I stand. I told him honestly that, although I am honored to support him in this election, I remain a Republican through and through. When he comes up for a second term, if he is running against a real Republicanand not an extremistthere's a good chance I will support the Republican candidate. I am not changing parties. I am opposed to Marilyn Musgrave because I am true to the Republican values I believe in."
"Stan said he didn't have a problem with that, as long as, when the time comes, I remember to judge him by what he accomplishes for the District in Congress, and not by a party label. I told him that I will be fair, but that I remain a Republican first and foremost."
"You can't take a one-size-fits-all approach to our district"
"As far as issues, I see education and economic opportunity at the top of the list. We're part of the food basket of America and the world. We need a strong Congressman who knows how to press that advantage to create jobs and other economic benefits for our district."
"Our district is very diverse, from the farmers in the plains to the urban areas along the front range. That's why you can't take a hidebound, one-size-fits-all aproach to our district's educational needs. Here we have fine institutions such as CSU and UNC, and yet in other parts of the state, there just aren't the educational opportunities that there should be. You have just as much brainpower among the young people of the rural areas as you do in the cities. We have to make sure that brainpower gets developednot just in the wealthy areasbut all across our district."
"The same issue of diverse needs applies to health care. People in the eastern plains simply don't have good access to health care. I honestly worry about people who have chronic or serious illnesses and live in the eastern plains region. Many people simply don't have the health services they need within reasonable traveling distance."
"Problems like these are difficult to solve. They require strong leaders who can get people to put aside their differences and work together to get the job done. As a Republican, I firmly believe that you can't solve the problems in the Fourth District or anywhere else by just throwing money down the drain. We need a leader in Congress who is well-informed, pragmatic, and willing to think creatively to find solutions."
"I want someone who will develop common-sense solutions"
"Stan Matsunaka has a superior ability to represent my diverse interests and needs as a Republican senior citizen. I want someone who will develop common-sense solutions to significant problems, not someone who will take an arbitrary party-line stand and tell me how and what to value in my life. Electing extremist Marilyn Musgrave would be an absolute disaster for Colorado's working families."
"Stan Matsunaka is an intelligent man who has integrity and is able to bring people together to get things done for our district. That's why I support Stan Matsunaka."
